I ended up taking nearly 60 units by the end of my pregnancy and i had to inject three times a day! But I couldn't get much exercise done because of the kids and exercise really helps keep diabetes under control. So do as much as you can. Stress does affect blood sugar levels. Whenever I argued with my husband my sugar went through the roof. Look after yourself. InshaAllah your baby will be fine.
Please take care of yourself since you have GD. Your numbers dont seem ridiculously scary or anything but need to be taken care of very well.
12 units is not a lot. Are you injecting yourself once a day at night or more than once? Try rubbing an ice cube for a couple of seconds on the skin, before your pinch it and inject. That numbs it for just a tiny fraction so you do not feel the needle. Actually the needle is really thin so you barely feel it anyway. After injecting massage the spot for a minute to help the insulin dissipate.
Are you testing your blood sugars upto 6-8 times a day? If you are not, a blood sugar test kit is a very wise investment. In the US they do not cost more than $80. Here Insurance usually covers the kit, but I do not know how it works for you. Testing with these kits many times a day is almost standard in cases of GD where insulin is injected. Test when you wake and also before and after meals and excerise, finally a last time at bed time. A good test kit will not be a painful process to follow. Please keep track of every reading. Your endocrinologist will thank you because you can be monitored well.
What worked for me was to excercise everytime I put even a morsel of food in my mouth. My endocrinologist finally was able to take me off the insulin because the excercise kept the sugars down all day. Moderate excercise has to be paced out everytime you eat... not just an hour everyday.
Please see a good nutritionist. My nutritionist had a few important tips for me. Watch how much milk and fruit you consume. Both have huge amounts of natural sugar. Natural or not... sugar is sugar.. and will make your numbers rise. Concentrate on vegetables for fiber and vitamins and minerals. Avoid artifical sweetners. Basically forget how SWEET tastes.. and your baby will thank you for it.
As for the rest, stress will exacerbate the situation, so watch out for that.
After you deliver the baby, please lose all the baby weight and more as rapidly as possible, especially around the waist, because GD is a good indicator of a propensity for diabetes. Also watch your triglycerides carefully. Triglycerides are bad guys that complicate diabetes and the heart.
I know it's scary but you'll be fine, insha'Allah. My sister had GD for both of her pregnancies -- also had to take insulin -- and alhumdillah she and her children are doing fine.
I'm on a journey.....quietly taking timid steps as life plays in front of me....I can feel the excitment building as I take each step.....I've got a line following behind me that keeps getting longer..... Come join in the wonder.... Surely someone up there has a plan for me.......
