Fun and Fair Game......

In addition to our family happenings......our newest family past time is.....KARAOKE! YA! I wonder if that is horribly unislamic of us? Well, I'll say this.........it's GREAT FUN!! All of us sit around and take a try at different songs........some of the more notable favourites were:

Hakuna Matata - 11 yr old
Twinkle Star - 5 yr old
Just around the Riverbend (Pocahontas) - me
Car Wash - my brother....(HAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!)
High School Musical songs - 15 yr old and some duets with my brother......
Beauty and the Beast songs - 13 yr old

Oh you can't imagine how much laughter goes on in our house! My mom just sits and watches, although we've tried to get her to sing. I'm just waiting for the neighbours to complain about all the male cats hanging around outside.....HAHAHAHA!!

(and a special, special thanks to the over generous, totally kind sister! LOVE YA!)

~~~~~~~~~
So something new........
I"ve just completed an interview with the Toronto Star about the state of Polygamy among the muslims here in Toronto. It's going to be an article that will open some eyes. I've used my name in the article, and I'm guessing that many members of the community will realize that it is DEFINITELY me. (I mean, 5 kids right?)
I called out the muslim community, some sheikhs and generally, created some havoc. I'll link you up here when it's published........
~~~~~~~~

I rented the movie The Color Purple yesterday. I cried my eyes out. And I wondered if I could relate to Celie? Where her husband was totally abusive and stifling and then suddenly, she just had enough and broke free? Didn't I work hard like Celie? I cried so much......sigh. Have you seen this movie? How did it affect you all?

Congrats on your interview. Insha'Allah the results will be rewarding.

I have seen and read The Color Purple, but it was a longtime ago. I made me cry too. It is just a book but it allowed me to realize that sometimes you have to just breakfree from the madness of a careless person because you start to lose yourself and your sensibilities as well. Also there is so much happiness out there..why can't it be ours?

It is wonderful that laughter is now heard in your home all the time - truly terrific. Watched the Colour Purple a long time ago - do not remember how it made me feel. Keep us posted on the 'fall out' from tne newspaper article.

I am SO glad you interviewed for that article. Those Sheikhs need to be called out on that bullshit.

Love ya babe, hope nothing bad comes down on you for it.

I hope it ridicules the hubex as well.

Assalamu `alaykum,
I can't wait to see the article!

There is something that DEFINITELY needs to happen in our community and that all shuyukh, imams and what not should agree on... off with the shady "Islamic" marriages!

I have countless examples of sisters who have been abused and left in really bad situations because they had married "islamically" without getting married by the state. And many have been lied to and unknowingly married someone already married with these "islamic" marriages.

I honestly believe that the fiqh people should meet and start creating guidelines to protect women!

Also waiting in anticipation for the article....

The colour purple was an excellent movie. Celie did everything for that man and still he treated her like dirt. I never thought she would break free, but when she did... it was amazing!

LOL! Glad to hear about the karaoke! Sounds like soooo much fun!

You are a Celie, Safa. It's a fabulous movie (I have used it in my Women in Film course) and while heartbreaking in places is all about the power of the human spirit. You have that power, Safa, maash'Allah.

Glad to hear the interview went well. You can't promote change unless you are willing to start showing the way. Good for you!

Love,

I am so pleased to see your posts full of such life and happiness and your largest worry being if you picked your brain the wrong way too hard...haha

I too love "The color Purple". When Shug, her "cowife" sings to Celie in the "drinkinghole"

Miss Celie's blues:

Gone is your Celiedays. You had your sisters here singing this song to you in many different tunes and words.

The article, that we all anticipate with great interest, makes you a Shug in a hijab to me.
You travelled far and landed so shortly ago, and you are already making waves and standing up for yourself and the community through your experiences. Bravo!

Go HijabiShug!

Shug taking on and reconciles with her minsterfather:

I should refrain from talking about god as an atheist, however this is not an ability of mine, so here goes:
If there was one, and if in islam a smile is sadaqa, I would reason that you, putting all those smiles on your childrens faces through singing happy innocent songs as a family, after all they have been through, would please a good and merciful god.

Happy happy happy to see all the happiness in your posts! :-)

If I was here I definitly would have helped and given you a place to stay and help getting to the airport.

You are so so so strong!!! You should right a book and call it the arab muslim man!! not the true muslim man. They are just yuk!!!

Allah really is with you.. I love you!!!
