A little humour here in Egypt....
So I was thinking about how some words keep popping up in other words in Egyptian arabic.....and I got a really funny idea......so here goes....
Egyptian 101!!
Shukha - means excrement....commonly referred to babies when they dirty their diapers....
Shukh Butta - could be a duck with bad diarrhea....but it actually means scribbling....lol!!
Shukharra - basically farting sounds from the nose....but it actually means snoring....

Dughaat - pressure
Hala al dughaat - a pressure situation? But no....it's a pressure cooker

Shariah - islamic law
Shar'ah - a street ( I say them both the same....!!)
Ashaarh - tremble (it still sounds like the other two to me!)
Sharaah - to explain....(but PUHLEASE...lets get another sound...!!)

Shahadah - proclaim belief in islam
Ish had - to bear witness against
shahadah - this one means diploma....is it spelled the same, I wonder?
shuhuud - many witnesses...(why can't they just add S on the end?)

khalat - blender
culotte - ? Yep...underwear....work on that KH sound ladies....it's embarassing when u are at the fix it store asking about your blender and people are snickering cuz you asked about ur underwear....WORK ON THE KH!!!
khalta - mixture....sorta like the onions and stuff you'd spice up kufta with...

I was putting a khalta in my khalat while wearing my culotte when my hala al dughaat sounded like a shukharra, so I started to ashaarh.

I know that there are a lot of French loan words in Egyptian Arabic...I saw culotte, and then I thought about "maquillage"
One of my husband's good friends is an Egyptian married to an American, his Arabic cracks me up with all his hard "g"'s...I love how Arabic is different wherever you are, I can only really understand what they speak in Algiers... but I love hearing Egyptians speak Arabic even when I do not understand a dern thing. When they say gameelah rather than jamilah always makes me smile!
Getting Mr Berber Nationalist to actually speak Arabic rather than Berber to me is another story, of course, so I have to get my Arabic from outside sources. Kabyle is one crazy language, but it sounds cool too. You have to be another arabic source for me! Seriously, they speak so much Kabyle up in my in-laws, I learned half my Arabic from Umm Abdurrahman!
