Asalamalaykom Smart Safa,
Most people are looking at your pics and saying, "OH! That's nice!"
But, I would not be suprised if some creep has looked at your pics and gone for the ky. Gross, but this is the internet.
Would you go around to complete strangers and hand them photos of your kids? I know you wouldn't. You are such a good mom.
I don't post any people pics for this reason. I don't want my face or the faces of those I love to live in somebody else's sick mind.
The internet is an innovation that fools us into thinking it's OK to do these things, but when you really look at the truth of the matter, it's strange. I'm constantly wondering how to stay halal in this medium.
Also, as a Muslim, we believe in evil eye, ya?
Be careful.
One last thought, if your hub ever found out about this blog, would it be OK with him that you posted pics or not? He does have some consideration in this.
8:33 AM
I didn't put my photo up because...well you know why. My husband would get very upset. He doesn't even want me to share pictures with friends much less strangers in the blogosphere but it is up to you. It is your choice where you display your photos and if it is here then you go on ahead and display baby...display.
8:36 AM
You know AH That is the reason I took my kids pictures off my blog. The world is scary and so is the internet. You make an excellent point.
8:44 AM
I think its fine, I had originally started my blog as a way to keep family in the loop with me and my kids.
I suppose I don't want to think of weirdo's looking at them, lord knows theres no shortage of those on the net. I guess I've never thought THAT much into it.
10:12 AM
I don't put my picture on my blog. Occassionally I do put some up of my kids. I usually just put pictures of my kids on Flickr for those that I have approved to see.
10:27 AM
Well my reason would be because picture taking is haraam and with it being the month of ramadaan we should try our best to avoiding sins wa Allahu Musta'an.
10:48 AM
Salam alaikoum
I don't put pics of myself up because I am a pretty strange bird...i am the only person in Lausanne that I know of from Mississippi who is married to an Algerian from France...not having pictures up helps me keep the illusion of anonymity even though i know if someone is psycho enough or creepy enough they will find out my bizness. So I think having pics up is up to you, I think there are psychos everywhere whether or not you have pics up...I don't know.
11:05 AM
Oh leave them up! At least the ones of you and/or hubby. You are fully covered and since when is picture taking haraam??? Never hear this one and I live in the Gulf where folks are more conservative than most....
Salaam Alaikum,
PM
11:05 AM
Yah, I think you should take them... best to be safe than sorry...
PM - there are some who say that pictures are halaal, but I think it's mostly the Saudi shuyookh who think so.
11:25 AM
As'salamu alaykum,
I always worry that someone who knows your hubby will see the pictures and then the cat will be out of the bag. And for the mouse why oh why haven't you gotten the cat!
As soon as I told you that, one critter showed up in my house. I made dua and I was worried and called the pest control people and they wanted $1200 to patch up all the holes on the exterior of my house and basically seal all entry ways to the house. Lo and behold a day before they were to come a kitten showed up at my front door meowing. Meow meow meow. I heard her way in the bedroom we opened the front door and gave it some food and it walked in the house and well Bubba is here to stay. There have been no droppings or any sign of mice since he arrived mashallah al hamdulilaah. So get a cat. My zoge is annoyed with it as it likes to lick his feet and jump on him when he's in sujood. She's just like a little toddler!
11:43 AM
It's like what 7 - 3 for taking them down?? Wow....I spose I never thought about it. Maybe I'll take down the ones of me only.....I see no harm in the others.....still listening tho....
11:55 AM
Part of what return to your blog after my initial visit was having this face to associate with the name, but that's just me. There are sickos everywhere, I agree, but there's so much more out there for them to see that you in a veil. I say, leave it up, but only for my personal preference!

Taken from sahih bukhari
No. 2090 - Narrated Said bin Abu Al-Hasan: While I was with Ibn 'Abbas a man came and said, "O father of 'Abbas! My sustenance is from my manual profession and I make these pictures." Ibn 'Abbas said, "I will tell you only what I heard from Allah's Apostle . I heard him saying, 'Whoever makes a picture will be punished by Allah till he puts life in it, and he will never be able to put life in it.' " Hearing this, that man heaved a sigh and his face turned pale. Ibn 'Abbas said to him, "What a pity! If you insist on making pictures I advise you to make pictures of trees and any other unanimated objects."

No. 4840 - Narrated Aisha:
the wife of the Prophet) I bought a cushion having on it pictures (of animals). When Allah's Apostle saw it, he stood at the door and did not enter. I noticed the sign of disapproval on his face and said, "O Allah's Apostle! I repent to Allah and His Apostle. What sin have I committed?' Allah's Apostle said. "What is this cushion?" I said, "I have bought it for you so that you may sit on it and recline on it." Allah's Apostle said, "The makers of these pictures will be punished on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be said to them, 'Give life to what you have created (i.e., these pictures).' " The Prophet added, "The Angels of (Mercy) do not enter a house in which there are pictures (of animals)."

Hi Safa, I missed the comments about the pics, I'll have to go look for them.....lol. I think it's up to you if you want to put them up and obviously you did want to put them up so I'm glad you did. Now I know the kind face that has helped me so much and reached out to me with love and support, and you didn't know me from Adam's housecat (hehe......cat....lol).
I vote that you leave them up.
I won't put my picture up because I'm ugly. ;-)
4:09 PM
Hi Safa. Sooooo.... I just did exactly what you are thinking about doing. .I took down the pix of me alone (only left up group or me and Dh) and took down my home pix. Partly because my photobucket had gotten HUGE and partly because I had/am having an incedent. But here is my thoughts. If you are not having an incedent, and you're covered... and your DH doesn't mind... who cares? Do what you want. It's your blog. Some people will always have a different opinion and perhaps based on good reason too. But go with what you believe in. Like I'd post about my new haircut but so far my only pix of it are in my bra and PJ bottoms to show DH what it looked like flat-ironed (I don't flat iron in clothes, yuck) and since we're like married and all.. I didn't care to send one like that. But obviously it's not going on the blog :)
10:17 PM
finally some comment moderation....
11:17 PM
As'salamu alaykum,
Do it, don't hesitate, take the chance and remove the pictures.

Dear Sister Amatullah,
Are these both supposed to be authentic hadith? It's interesting because there is so much actual imagery -- even of humans in Islamic art history, including images of the Prophet (saw)(btw I am an art historian). This opens up a whole discussion that I don't want to get started in this thread.
Anyway, I visited your blog and while I respect your choices, I see that you and I are on a very different track... ;-)))
Salaam Alaikum,

amatullah, by your 'explanation' we wouldn't be allowed to take x-rays. there's a huge difference between photos - which weren't even around 1400 yrs ago! - and drawing pictures/sculpting.
safa! leave them up! much love x
5:31 AM
I respectfully vote to leave them up. I think if some weirdo creep is going to get all hot over a fully covered muslimah-then that is HIS jihad-not Safa's. It is not her responsiblity to over-compensate for what someone somewhere in the world might be thinking!
If she were walking down the street fully covered and a strong wind whipped by and showed some of her figure and a man standing on the side of the road had an impure thought-who's fault is that?
If people want to stalk you on the net-they certainly don't need your picture to do it! Safa in the end it's about what you are comfortable with and what you feel is right with Allah-not anyone else because you are the only one who has to answer for deeds!
8:25 AM
I vote that you do whatever makes you feel comfortable! ;) I personally like the pix (and it was nice to have a face to go with the words) but there are a ton of sickos out there...
10:00 AM
Safa,
sister I love you I really do.
Do what you think is best not what people say the buggy man will do to you.
I personally don't think pictures are haram. Now if we all got around and built a golden calf or maybe a statue of your husband and MM; put on tribal paint, lit a bond fire, made voodo dolls and stabbed the dolls while dancing around the fire until we past out, now I think thats a bit to much dear... :-p
I am very logical and like to put the pro's and con's on a sheet of paper and whom ever has more is usually what I go with. You might want to try it and see how it turns out for you.
Pro's
1. when your kids have kids they grow old can tell their kids stories and help them better relate by showing them the picture.
2. Many poor nations have people who become doctors and they never left their country. When this happens they usually don't have the amount of bodies needed to help them practice their skills and have to relay on books with PICTURES to show them medical procedures. Some of these very same people might have saved your life. hmmm
3. I have never been to the jungle. However, I would like to one day and I'm glad to know several verities of snakes to avoid that might take my life. I know them because of classes I have taken which showed me detailed pictures and tapes. This helped me more than any Discription ever could.
4. I rather have a clear color photo of a rapist, robber or general criminal etc; then for someone to give me a discription of them.
5. I am very pro photo ID for so many reasons and I think women who wear niqaab should take their picture without their Niqaab because that's pointless. If benefits us but really it helps them out the MOST. You can put it back on when you're done. I promise I won't look. :)
Con's
1. Only if you put picture up on wall, surround it with candles, budist scrolls, and fruits....
2. NET- crazy people... which is a big negative but then I got to thinking when I go outside the crazy people are everywhere too looking at my kid, husband and I. Really, crazy people can't be avoided. BECAUSE THEY ARE CRAZY. lol I'm sorry I'm not veiling my kids like Michael Jackson and I'm not staying in my house all day. Allah SWT didn't make me to be a ground hog.
3. Feel free to add some more cons here if you like.
:)
