I think this is common in your situation. You have had to pick up all the responsibility and make a life for you and yours kids without him. He hates seeing that -- it is a reminder of what losing choices he made -- and he drags them (and you) down into his messy life. If I were you, I would work on getting child support and set up regular minimal visitation through the courts -- supervised if necessary. Chances are if you get him for support he'll duck out and run away to Egypt anyway. Problem solved.
