Jumma al Yateem........
Have any of u ever heard this phrase?
Here is my little arabic lesson for you. The Orphan Friday - Jumma al Yateem. Here in Egypt, this is used to refer to the last Friday before something shall happen...for example, insha Allah, Ramadan is supposed to start on Sunday here in Egypt.....so that makes this Friday, Jumma al Yateem. The last Friday before Eid may also be called that. Isnt' that just a nice way of saying it? I believe that most Arabs prolly use this terminology......so how about you guys all surpise someone (arab) with this phrase....tell them, "Oh wow! Isn't Ramadan on Sunday? So that makes today Jumma al Yateem!" I wonder if their faces will register some surprise??? (It's already Fajr Friday here)

I am preoccupied that there is a rat in my house.....I think I must have slept all night with one eye open. I woke up many times, once even thinking I had sensed something run outta the kitchen.....oh I know...I'm a nut. (I was sleeping on the couch) But I just couldn't relax. Once the same thing happened when I was sleeping in my room, and sure enough when I raised my head to look at my bedroom door there was a mouse appraising my edibility. I"ve given up on the thought of sleep now......and besides, I'm going with my SIL to the Friday Farmer's Market. Oh it's gonna be PACKED considering that Sun is Ramadan. (Insha Allah) We are heading out at 7 am. (Hmmmmm.....well I'm driving....so that means she's coming with me, right?)
****************************************
Found out that this same SIL, (The only one who talks to me....prolly cuz we live in the same bldg) did a weird thing yesterday. I told her I"d take her to the supermarket to buy some stuff.....and had my 11 yr old with me outside.....deal was...I'd drop my 11 yr old off at home, and she'd come down when I honk......well, I sent the 11yr old upstairs with that bag of mango that the villa family had frozen for me.....seems that when the 11yr old passed SIL's door, she opened it and asked my sweetie what she has in the bag. Sweetie told her, but that wasn't enough. SIL asked her to show her the bag...and she opened it and looked at the mango....then proceeded to ask her what she had in the other bag. ???? Now I didn't know this, okay? So then SIL comes to me in the car waiting outside, oblivious to the fact that she just searched my daughter.....and she gets in the car and says to me....."Hey? Your tree didn't produce mangos or what?" (arabic translation) And I'm like? Did u just see my sweetie going upstairs? She's got a bag of mango....nope, she says. After she finishes her shopping with me and I get home, Sweetie tells me what happened. Now I'm pissed. Why would she do that? (not the first time, btw....) And you know what gets me going? She wears niqab. The only one in the family to wear it. I wonder if I should call her on it.....call her and ask her why she said she didn't see Noora, when she did and even searched the bags, and then come and ask me where's my mango? Isn't it petty? I have to keep my eyes open when I deal with her. I know I won't ask her.....unless Allah puts the steps in front of my face, I will not ask. But if the opportunity shall arise, I will rise to it.

Wait there's the RAT! Oh, nevermind.....
************************************
I'm so tired I can't sleep.......I got so much work to do....I still haven't finished unpacking. Ohhhh.....do you guys have Ariel laundry soap with Downey in it? I LOVE IT! It smells so good. We also have TIDE with musk for Ramadan. No, really.....do you guys have it? And you should see the new bottle of dish soap called PRIL.....they packaged it in a funoos. I'll take pictures so you guys see it........

Don't forget it's Jumma al Yateem....

lol! You know, Safa, one of my older students in Cairo (a 14 year old girl) told me that her mother always said, "Egypt's national pasttime is lying." I saw lies used (I should say, I STILL see lies) being used to avoid confrontation. I saw lies used to avoid hurting someone's feelings. I saw lies used in ways that were intended to help. Classic example: A few years ago, a small study was done in Cairo. A man would ask several people, "Can you give me directions to the Egyptian Embassy?". Not one person said, "I don't know." Why? They just wanted to be of some service.
My friend would tell me (also married to an Egyptian man), "We value truth, and opt to use it as much as possible. Egyptians value truth, and therefore seek to preserve it by using it sparingly."
Before I get a slew of hate posts about stereotyping Egyptians, let me clarify by saying that I think, in my humble experience, many used the truth differently than Safa and I do. Safa, your SIL probably doesn't think she's lying, rather, she was nosey, and doesn't want to upset you with that, so she avoids the truth. Weird, but has happened to me more times than I wish to count!!

I don't think that some people should be upset....as many egyptians that are like u described..there are the few who fall thru the cracks. I had a good time reading this post....

salam alaikoum

thanks casmee....

I feel your frustration, Safa. Lies, from my cultural perspective, whatever the motivation, erode away at level of trust in any relationship, whether it's your SIL, husband, etc.

I've never heard of Ariel detergent....we have Tide with Downy though. What's a funoos??
10:47 AM
Ariel detergent is in England.....I saw a commercial for it.....a funoos is a Ramadan Lantern....so much a part of Ramadan here in Egypt. Funny how it was never a part of Ramadan while I lived in Canada. The kids gather at night carrying their lanterns in the street singing Ramadan songs......
12:33 PM
See....that's the kind of stuff I'd love to experience. Ramadan here doesn't feel as exciting as that sounds. I'd love to experience Ramadan in a Muslim-majority country. (Notice how I didn't say in a "Muslim country"? LOL Sorry...I won't get all political on ya!)
And after I wrote that first comment, I went and saw the pictures of the Tide and Pril. That is so cool!!!
